We invite you to mining enthusiasts and Earth Sciences for a meeting with the Student Research Groups, operating at the Faculty of Geoengineering, Mining and Geology, Wroclaw University of Science and Technology. We want to present realized projects and which we are planning to complete in 2017/2018 academic year. The event is dedicated not only to high school graduates but also to all those who are interested in the environment, science and interesting phenomena of the world around us.

BLOCK B: LECTURES
12.15 – 13.00 s. A5 Innovation and education on Raw Materials
Krzysztof Kubacki  CLC Manager /EIT Raw Materials
The huge potential of the raw materials sector gives young people a broad perspective on development. How does KIC Raw Materials help with? - we will tell during the lecture.

13.15 – 14.00 s. A5 Career opportunities in the raw materials sector
dr hab. inż. Herbert Wirth prof. nadzw. – Wroclaw Univeristy of Science and Technology
One of the transformations of the modern economy is the gradual transition towards a knowledge-based economy and technological innovation. Business opportunities are increasingly determined by the intellectual potential and knowledge of the latest developments in contemporary science. It is a challenge and inspiration to carry out interesting projects, research and innovation.

BLOCK C: Practical (Required prior registration for activities)

- Experimental volcanic eruption, or where some minerals come from?
09.00 – 09.30 (Outdoor show in front of the main entrance of the building Geocentrum)
Homemade models of volcanic eruptions you can prepare using vinegar and soda. We will try to carry out a "true" hot volcanic eruption with volcanic ash and lava flow. This demonstration will be an introduction to a short story about the (sometimes surprising) raw materials that were formed in such unusual circumstances – like basalt, porphyry, sulfur... but also copper ores or diamonds!
Registration 1.08.2017 -18.09.2017

- Geocatching (field game using GPS Tracker)
09:00-10.00 parking Geocentrum
10.00-11.00 parking Geocentrum
11.00-12.00 parking Geocentrum
12.00-13.00 parking Geocentrum
13.00-14.00 parking Geocentrum
14.00-15.00 parking Geocentrum
Geocaching is a field game that uses GPS receivers to search  hidden boxes by other participants. These boxes are properly protected, watertight containers containing small gifts and notebooks in which the finders successive record their findings.
Registration 1.08.2017-18.09.2017

-
Earth’s magnetic field and magnetometry
09.15-10.30 s. 260 Geocentrum and outside
10.45 – 12.00 s. 260 Geocentrum and outside
Earth magnetic field its essence, origin and structure. Methods of measuring the earth's magnetic field. The scope of magnetometry. Types of magnetometers and the principles of their operation. Presentation of proton magnetometer: construction, principle of operation and methodology of field measurements. Demonstration of measurement in the field.
Registration 1.08.2017-18.09.2017

- Slip resistance test
09.15 – 10.00 s. 087 Geocentrum
10.15 – 11.00 s. 087 Geocentrum
11.15 – 12.00 s. 087 Geocentrum
Determination of anti-slip properties of the stone slabs of different textures The proposed laboratory tests concern the determination of the anti-slip stone slabs with different textures. Researches will be done according to the standard PN-EN 14231:2004.
Knowledge the value of the measured SRV index allows to optimize the type of this stone surface. The study will concern the analysis of the usable floor area not polluted as well as contaminated, for example water or oil.
Registration 1.08.2017-18.09.2017

- Working technology of machines ‘giants in surface mining’
09.30 – 10.15 s. A4 Geocentrum
10.30 – 11.15 s. A4 Geocentrum
The lecture presents the method of opencast mining as a method of extracting natural resources using various technological systems. The presentation focus on the construction and operation of large machines (e.g. bucket wheel excavators), it takes into account their dimensions, construction and productivity. Presented "giants" are one of the largest earthmoving machines.
Registration 1.08.2017-18.09.2017

- Extraction of natural  resources
09.30 – 10.30 s. 082 Geocentrum
11.00 – 12.00 s. 082 Geocentrum
Take a trip with us along the trail of geology, chemistry and technology, allowing you to perform some experiments illustrating the process of extraction of copper ore and its treatment in the industrial process. In our everyday life, we are not aware of how surrounded we are with “rock raw materials” and how much we depend on them. A vast immensity of products. But what are those “rock raw materials”? How are they obtained and what the deposits of those resources look like? Which unit processes are necessary to obtain those materials? Which of those resources can be treated – and how – to obtain the final product, i.e. copper?
Registration 1.08.2017-18.09.2017

- Minerals, rocks and fossils from Polish mineral deposits
10.30-11.00 s. 263 Geocentrum
12.00-12.30 s. 263 Geocentrum
13.00-13.30 s. 263 Geocentrum
14.30-15.00 s. 263 Geocentrum
Extraction of mineral resources is essential to meet industry and household needs. During the intensive exploitation, curiosities significant for scientists or collectors are often discovered that would never be discovered without the mining activity. The exhibition, combined with a short lecture, shows the specimens of selected minerals, rare rocks and fossils obtained in this way.

Mining is defined as science which covering all issues related to mineral extraction or as activities required in this field, ie exploration and identification of deposits, opening up and extraction of mineral from deposit,  transport, mineral processing, and reclamation and management of post-mining area. The goal of classes is presented available computer tools (eg, Datamine Studio, ArcGIS) used for modeling and visualization of mining facilities on selected stages of mining activity. During the laboratory the stages and effects of deposits  spatial modeling  and digital presentation of the post-mining area will be presented. Participants will be able to use the basic features of software to create and modify data sets, and present the results.

Vast diversity of mineral resources of Poland will be presented based on a collection of specimens used during laboratory classes in the subject "Mining geology and geology if mineral deposits". The most important parameters and directions of use of raw materials will be shown. The presentation  can be a valuable repetition for high school graduates, but actually every Polishman should have this knowledge.
